Common and Long-Term Side Effects

Common GLP-1 side effects

In most cases, mild side effects of GLP-1s should be temporary. And some may be easily managed.

Serious side effects

Serious side effects of GLP-1s are not common, but they are possible.

Some examples include:

  • pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • kidney problems
  • gallbladder problems
  • changes in vision

GLP-1s also have a boxed warning for the risk of thyroid cancer. A boxed warning is the most serious warning from the FDA.

Talk with a doctor to learn more about the risk of thyroid cancer.

How to manage serious side effects: Serious side effects, such as gastroparesis (the stomach takes too long to empty), require medical attention. Changes in diet or exercise won’t help to manage these side effects.

If the side effects seem life threatening or you think you’re experiencing persistent and severe symptoms, immediately call 911 or your local emergency number.

Are side effects different for each drug?

Side effects such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea are common with GLP-1s. Other side effects may differ by drug, and the severity and duration of these side effects can often be influenced by the dosage of the medication.

What is the long-term impact of GLP-1s in the body?

GLP-1s help you reach your goals, whether that is to help manage your blood sugar levels or weight loss. Beyond those benefits, GLP-1s also lower the risk of heart attack and stroke.

But there is also a risk of adverse effects with long-term use of GLP-1s.
